Swimming & Diving Suffers First Loss Of Season At FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team dropped its first meet of the season, falling to Florida State Friday afternoon, 200-81, at FSU’s Bobby E. Leach Center.

Britta Boesing had a solid day for UM, finishing first in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:28.85 while also finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 57.51. Ryann Labreche had a pair of second place finishes in the 500-yard freesyle event (4:58.32) and the 1000-yard freestyle event (10:13.81).

“I’m was really happy with the way our team came out and competed today,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “Despite the loss, I was proud of the way our girls continue to show improvement out there.”

In the Hurricanes’ lone team event, the group of Annika Saarnak, Kirsten Pomerleau, Lizzi Torres and Emerson Davis finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:30.93

Kelly Peloquin had UM’s top times in both the 100-yard breastroke (1:05.34) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.62), finishing third overall in both events. Saarnak had a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event (23.98) and a third-place mark in the 100-yard freestyle event (52.56).

Diver Brittany Viola won the women’s three-meter event with a score of 273.10, while she finished second in the one-meter event with a mark of 249.40.

On the men’s side, Ruben Ross finished second in both the one-meter event (347.20) and the three-meter event (345.90) while newcomer J.J. Kinzbach finished third in the one-meter event and fifth in the three-meter event with scores of 338.55 and 274.90 respectively.

The `Canes will return to the pool Nov. 2 when they return home to face Houston at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool at 5 p.m.
