Soccer Shuts Out Maryland for Sixth-Straight Win at Home
Oct. 14, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – Freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) fired in the game-winning goal in the 89th minute as the University of Miami women’s soccer team picked up its sixth-straight win at home, shutting out Maryland, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) grabbed five saves – all in the first half – for the Hurricanes en route to her school-record 14th career shutout. With the win, Miami improves to 8-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the ACC, moving into a tie for second place with No. 15 Florida State. Maryland’s Yewande Balogun finished with nine saves for the Terps (5-2-2, 0-5-0), who remain winless in the league alongside NC State.
“Lauren [McAdam] has been a consistent player for us throughout her career,” said sixth-year Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro, who has guided the Hurricanes to a 3-0-1 all-time record versus Maryland – her alma mater. “Not only does she continue to improve as a goalkeeper, but she has really been instrumental in helped the team develop in her four years here. I think she has been a big part of our success, and her ability to get these shutouts is simply proof of that.”
Despite playing to a scoreless tie at the half, both teams got off to strong starts, as the Hurricanes registered six shots on goal and the Terps recorded five. With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, Steinbruch fired off a shot from 18 yards out. Maryland`s keeper came out of the net in defense, but Steinbruch’s shot sailed over her head and just high of the net.
Just five minutes into the second half, Steinbruch threatened again, taking a shot from inside the penalty box. A Terrapin defender blocked the shot and the ball deflected out of bounds for a Miami corner kick. Junior Rachael Rigamat (La Crescenta, Calif.) had three shots on goal in the second half, including a shot in the 71st minute that was blocked by another Maryland defender.
But with just under two minutes remaining in the game, Steinbruch nailed her 13th goal of the season -her school-record fifth game-winner of 2007. With a conference-leading 89 shots so far this season, Steinbruch moves into first place in Miami single-season shots and into 10th place in career shots. She also moves into second place in single-season points (29), remains in second place in single-season goals (13) and moves into a tie for seventh place in career goals.
With her fourth shutout of the season, McAdam moves into a tie for fifth place in single-season shutouts, moves into eighth place in single-season saves (57) and extends her school record in career saves to 271.
The Hurricanes return to action on Wed., Oct. 17, with a non-conference match at cross-town rival Florida International at 7 p.m. Miami then returns to ACC competition on Sun., Oct. 21, with a televised game at No. 15 Florida State at 1 p.m. The game will air live on Sun Sports.
