UM Swimming & Diving Opens Fall Season This Weekend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team opens the 2007 fall season this weekend when it hosts FIU Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool before traveling to Fort Myers to go up against Florida Gulf Coast University Saturday at 11 a.m.
“I am excited about our first meet of the season,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “It will be a great time for me and the other coaches to watch the girls compete and see where they are.”
The swimming team returns 15 letterwinners from last season and welcomes five newcomers to the squad. The women’s diving team returns three divers while the men’s team consists of one returnee and one newcomer.
“We have very high expectations for this team this year,” Shefchunas said. “They have been training at such a high level and I really look forward to seeing how they do in competition this weekend.”
After Friday afternoon’s meet against FIU, the Hurricanes will head to FGCU Saturday for their second consecutive dual meet against an in-state opponent.
“This will their first home meet ever, as they have just started the program,” said Shefchunas. “Again, it will be great chance to see the girls compete.”
After this weekend’s meets, UM returns home Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Villanova at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
