Miami Soccer Falls in Double Overtime at No. 4 Virginia
Oct. 7, 2007
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team saw its six-match unbeaten streak snap as the Hurricanes dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to fourth-ranked Virginia, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
After playing to a scoreless tie through the first overtime period, Virginia’s Shannon Foley netted her sixth score of the season – the gamewinner – in the 107th minute.
“Virginia was definitely the best team we have played all year,” said head Miami coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We were fortunate enough to weather the storm during the first half, and I’m very proud of the team for coming out composed and confident in the second half. I felt like we created a lot of chances to win.
“It was disappointing because we put everything out there to try to win the game. Passion and heart… But we really improved overall as a team, and it’s something that is going to be motivating going into next weekend.”
With their first ACC loss of the season, the Hurricanes fall to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play, while the Cavaliers – who are unbeaten in their last nine games – improve to 8-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the league.
The Cavaliers out-shot the Hurricanes 23-10, including a 12-1 edge in the first half. Miami’s leading scorer freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) and sophomore Jessica Wyble (Potomac, Md.) each registered a pair of shots – including one apiece on goal, while senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) grabbed seven saves in 106 minutes and 54 seconds in goal.
Virginia’s Chantel Jones finished with four saves in her eighth shutout of the season.
The Cavaliers moved into second place in the ACC standings with the win, while the Hurricanes moved into a four-way tie for third place.
Miami returns home to Cobb Stadium to face unbeaten and ninth-ranked Boston College (8-0-3, 1-0-2 ACC) on Thurs., Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
