Steward Leads UM After First Round at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – Senior Jessica Steward (Mystic, Conn.) fired a one-under-par 71 Sunday afternoon to lead the University of Miami women’s golf team through the first round of competition at the 2007 Cougar Classic hosted by College of Charleston at Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club.

Steward, who shot a 35 on the front nine and 36 on the back, concluded the afternoon tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard while the Hurricanes wrapped up the first round tied for 10th place in the 20-team field with a 297 (+9).

Junior Anabelle Paulino (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) finished tied for 27th with a first round 73 while freshman Christina Hirano (Pinole, Calif.) fired a 75 to finish tied for 49th.

Senior Hagen Wientraub (Davie, Fla.) and freshman Maria Ronderos (Bradenton, Fla.) sit tied for 74th after shooting 78 each.

Play at the Cougar Classic will resume Monday with the second round followed by the final round Tuesday.
