Soccer Routs Alabama A&M, 8-0, for First Win of Season
Sept. 2, 2007
Oxford, Miss. – Freshmen Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) each recorded a hat trick to lead the University of Miami women’s soccer team to an 8-0 rout of Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon to help the Hurricanes remain unbeaten in 2007.
It marked the first time a pair of Hurricanes (1-0-1) recorded a hat trick in a game. Additionally, it was the highest offensive output for Miami under sixth-year head coach Tricia Taliaferro and the most goals scored by the Hurricanes since a school-record 10-0 win at Stetson on Oct. 27, 2001.
“Today, not only did we create a lot of scoring opportunities – we finished them,” said Coach Taliaferro. “We’re back on track, and we will to continue to build on that.
“I’m pleased the freshmen have stepped up and are contributing this early in the season.”
Steinbruch knocked in the game winner in the ninth minute, followed by three-straight goals by Singer – the first coming just 24 seconds after Steinbruch’s score – to push the Hurricanes up 4-0 by halftime. Singer was assisted by sophomore Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif.), senior Lindsay Curtin (Fairfax, Va) and senior Sheuneen Ta (London, England), respectively.
Steinbruch took a pass from Curtin and netted her second goal of the game in the 68th minute. Freshman Kim Cipollina (Basking Ridge, N.J.) then became Miami’s third freshman goalscorer of the young season, pushing the ‘Canes ahead 6-0 on a score in the 71st minute.
Steinbruch completed her own hat trick in the 76th minute with an unassisted goal, while senior Akilah Moore (Evanston, Ill.) capped the scoring for the afternoon with Miami’s eighth goal in the final minute of play.
For the match, Miami outshot Alabama A&M (0-2), 30-1 – just one shot off the school record for fewest shots allowed, and took eight corner kicks, while the Bulldogs had none.
Freshman Kyle Kocarek (Naperville, Ill.) logged all 90 minutes in goal in the Hurricanes’ first shutout of the year.
The Hurricanes return to the road this weekend with a pair of matches at the Long’s Electronics Samford Classic in Birmingham, Ala. Miami will face host Samford (2-0) on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 p.m. (EST) and then take on LSU (2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. (EST).
