July 9, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – Two members of Miami’s varsity eight, Laura Coltman and Laura Cordner, were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Rowing Team, as announced Friday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. All six conference schools that sponsor rowing were represented on the team.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Coltman earned her second consecutive All-ACC Academic honor after graduating in May with a degree in elementary education. The Toronto, Ontario native wrapped-up her career at Miami as a four-time letterwinner, and a two-time All-ACC selection.
Cordner, a sophomore from Melbourne Victoria, Australia is a second-year letterwinner majoring in Arts and Sciences. This season, she rowed as the third seat for the Hurricanes’ varsity eight squad.
This past season, Coltman and Cordner helped the Hurricanes’ varsity eight crew take home first place finishes at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Longhorn Invitational and in a dual meet against the University of Alabama. At the 2007 Aramark South/Central Regional Championships, Coltman and Cordner’s efforts also helped the Hurricanes capture a second place finish in the C/D semifinal. Both student-athletes were named to this season’s All-ACC Team, after the Hurricanes wrapped-up fourth-place overall at the 2007 ACC Championships.
For the second year in a row, Virginia leads all ACC schools with 10 selections. North Carolina secured six spots on the academic team, while Boston College and Clemson has five. Duke and Miami each notched a pair to complete the 30-member academic contingent.
In all, this year’s All-ACC Academic Rowing Team includes a trio from the NCAA Varsity Four championship boat, three All-Americans, 18 CRCA National Scholar Athletes, five CRCA All-Region honorees, 11 All-ACC performers, and six members of the ACC Crew of the Year (Virginia’s First Varsity Eight).
