Coral Gables, Fla. – The 2007 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Champion and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year Audra Cohen, senior Audrey Banada, junior Romy Farah, and freshman Laura Vallverdu were selected to the 2007 All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team, as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John D. This year’s 20-member academic squad included 10 All-ACC performers, six All-Americans and eight repeat honorees from 2006.
Miami led all ACC schools with four selections with Cohen (42-2 singles, 34-5 doubles), the ITA National Player of the Year, and ITA All-American Laura Vallverdu (singles) as the main features for the Hurricanes. Cohen, who accepted a proclamation last week declaring Friday, June 29, 2007, as “Audra Cohen Day” in Miami-Dade County, became the third student-athlete in ACC women’s tennis history to capture the NCAA singles championship. The junior from Plantation, Fla., finished the 2007 season ranked No. 1 in the nation and garnered the 2007 Honda Sports Award.
Banada, who wrapped-up her career at Miami as the all-time leader in career singles (110-25) and doubles (122-32), earned her first All-ACC Academic award, and finished No. 42 by the ITA, while Farah, who finished the season 24-17 in singles, and 34-17 in doubles, also earned her first honor. Vallverdu (32-4 singles, 23-7 doubles), who was nominated for the “Player to Watch” award by the ITA, concluded the season ranked No. 19 in the country that earned her All-American honors.
Georgia Tech landed three picks on this year’s academic unit, while North Carolina landed two on the academic list. Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest also earned a pair of academic nods, while Virginia and Virginia Tech placed one apiece.
In addition to Cohen, Jenna Long (North Carolina), Kristi Miller (Georgia Tech), Alison Silverio (Georgia Tech) and Federica van Adrichem (Clemson), five other members of the All-ACC team landed spots on the All-Academic squad which included Florida State’s Lauren MacFarlane and Nicole Slater, Miami’s Audrey Banada, Virginia’s Jennifer Stevens and Virginia Tech’s Inga Beermann.
