Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami along with head swimming coach Christie Shefchunas has named Tia Buchanan as the women’s assistant swimming coach.
“I am glad to be a part of an outstanding conference such as the ACC”, Buchanan stated. “I’m very happy to be a part of the Miami family.”
Buchanan joins the Hurricanes after serving three years as the Director of Operations for Swimming and Diving at Texas A&M University. There, she assisted in the recruiting process, team travel, and handled much of the program’s paperwork.
Aside from many other various duties asked of her by both the men’s and women’s staff, Buchanan assisted in the planning of the 2004 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, and the 2005 Zone D Diving Championships. This season, Buchanan was a part of tournament history as the Texas A&M women’s swimming team won their first Big 12 Championship. They also finished eighth-place, a new record, at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
During the summers at Texas A&M, Buchanan played a vital role in helping administer the Aggie Swim Camp, that saw a participation of over 650 campers four weeks during the summer.
A graduate of Texas A&M University, Buchanan earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management in December 2005, with a minor in business. She is originally from Houston, TX.
“I am looking forward to collaborating with Christie in the efforts of building this program”, commented Buchanan.
