Men's Tennis Closes Home Schedule This Weekend
April 5, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 37 University of Miami men’s tennis team will close out its 2007 regular-season home schedule at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center with a pair of tough ACC matches this weekend. The Hurricanes open the competition versus 3rd-ranked Virginia on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m. and then take on No. 30 Virginia Tech on Sunday, April 8, at 1 p.m.
Admission to both matches is free. Seniors Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) will be honored for their contributions to the `Canes’ (9-9, 4-3 ACC) tennis program in their final home match on Sunday between the doubles and singles rounds.
The Hurricanes are 4-4 all-time versus the ACC-leading Cavaliers (19-3, 7-0 ACC), who knocked Miami out of both the ACC and NCAA Tournaments last season. Virginia is led by second-ranked junior Somdev Devvarman, who joins Miami’s D’Agord as the only undefeated No. 1 players in ACC play at 7-0 apiece.
Miami’s eighth-ranked doubles duo of D’Agord and Cohen are the lone No. 1 pair in the ACC with a perfect 7-0 record heading into pivotal weekend play. However, Virginia’s second-ranked duo of Devvarman and Treat Huey are not far behind at 6-1 in the ACC – with their only loss a 9-8 (5) decision to Wake Forest on March 25.
No. 30 Virginia Tech (12-6, 3-4 ACC) rides a two-match ACC win streak into this weekend’s competition, led by 41st-ranked senior Arvid Puranen, who has compiled a 4-3 record in top-flight singles play. The Hurricanes lead the all-time series versus the Hokies, 5-3.
Following this weekend’s matches, the Hurricanes head north to close out their regular-season schedule. Miami will play No. 11 Wake Forest on Friday, April 13 at 5 p.m. and then take on No. 20 NC State in its regular-season finale on Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m.
