Hurricanes Earn ACC Diver of the Year and Freshman of the Year Awards

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami divers, junior Jenna Dreyer and freshman Brittany Viola captured the Atlantic Coast Conference Diver of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors respectively, it was announced Tuesday. The awards were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Dreyer, this season’s ACC Champion, will be taking home her second award, as she garnered the award in its first year of inception in 2005. The junior from Port Elizabeth, South Africa earned All-American honors after capturing the bronze medal in the one-meter at the 2007 Women’s NCAA Championships. At the ACC Championships, Dreyer swept the one-meter and three-meter springboards to earn the ACC Most Valuable Diver award, and became the first Hurricane in ACC history to win the 3-meter.

Viola will etch her name in the history book as the first Miami diver to earn the ACC Freshman of the Year award for the Hurricanes. The rookie from Orlando, Fla. captured her first All-American award after finishing sixth place in the platform diving event at this season’s Women’s NCAA Championships. Viola also earned All-American honorable mention at the NCAA’s in the three-meter diving springboard where she placed 14th overall.
