Three Miami Divers Win Platform Events at the Zone B Diving Championships

ATHENS, G.A. – The University of Miami diving squad completed their final day at the Zone B diving championships, as freshman Brittany Viola, senior Heather Bounds and freshman Ruben Ross all competed in the 10-meter platform finals at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia. Each diver captured automatic bids to make their way to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Viola, an Orlando, Fla. native, will make her first trip to the NCAA Championships after she sealed the deal to take home first place with a score of 644.45 for the automatic bid.
Bounds also qualified for the NCAA Championships when she came in third with a score of 608.60, marking it her third time qualifying in the 10-meter platform for the NCAA Championships. Bounds will also be competing in this year’s one-meter competition at the NCAA’s, after capturing a fourth place finish in the finals on Friday.
On the men’s side, Ross qualified for the NCAA Championships when he came in second in the men’s 10-meter platform with a score of 779.80 marking his second event on the weekend to advance. On Friday, Ross posted a second place finish in the men’s three-meter platform.
Also competing today was senior Derek Starks, who posted a sixth place finish in the platform with a score of 650.20
The NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place in Minneapolis, Minn. The women will begin Thursday, March 8 and run through Saturday, March 10, while the men’s meet begins Sunday, March 15 and runs through Tuesday, March 17.
