Dreyer and Ross Capture Gold at the ACC Championship

b>CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving and the men’s diving squads completed their second day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Thursday evening at the University of North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium.

The Hurricanes took home gold in the women’s one meter and the men’s three meter diving competitions.

For the third year in a row, a Hurricane has won the women’s one-meter event, after Dreyer notched a score of 336.00 to claim her second title. The Port Elizabeth, South Africa native came into Thursday evening’s final as the No. 1 seed after finishing the afternoon’s diving preliminaries with a score of 306.50. Miami finished with the two spot spots in the women’s one meter diving, as senior Heather Bounds took home the silver in the championship final posting a score of 284.35.

Making his collegiate debut in the conference championship, freshman Ruben Ross claimed his first championship title in the men’s three meter diving. The rookie from Regina Saskatchewan, Canada knocked down the rest of the competitors with a score of 439.15. Taking home the bronze was teammate Derek Starks who notched a score of 379.70.

In women’s swimming, the Hurricanes finished out the evening in fifth place with a team score of 141.

The day began with the 500 yard freestyle preliminaries, as senior Tara Erwin finished 12th place to clock in a time of 4:55.92. In the consolation final, she finished with a time of 4:58.95 for 16th place.

In the 200 yard Individual Medley (IM), Miami’s Britta Boesing swam an impressive, and this season’s fastest time of 2:02.87, to notch seventh place in the championship final. Earlier in the day, the sophomore from Tuebingen, Germany claimed fifth place in the preliminaries with a time of 2:02.93.

Freshman Kristen Pomerleau was the only Miami swimmer to advance to the 50 yard freestyle. Pomerleau clocked in at 23.59 to finish 15th. Prior to this evening’s final, the rookie finished 14th place at 23.57.

The ACC Championship meet will continue Friday with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. The schedule of events for the third day of competition consists of the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, men’s one meter diving preliminaries, and women’s three-meter diving preliminaries, men’s one meter diving finals, and the 400-yard medley relay.
