Swimming and Diving Set to Take On Florida International

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team will take on in-state rival Florida International University in a dual meet Friday, January 26 at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool set to begin at 4 p.m.

The Hurricanes (2-4) are ready to open their first home meet of the spring season on a winning path. After coming off a rocky start of the 2007 season on the road, Miami look to bounce back and claim another victory over the Golden Panthers. Miami started the fall season with a win at FIU, 181-52.

Miami is led by three freshmen who hold the fastest times on the team in three different events on the season.

Freshman Kelly Peloquin posted the fastest times so far on the season in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.42), 200 yard breaststroke (2:18.45), and the 400 yard Individual Medley (IM) (4:31.45).

Joining Peloquin in leading the Hurricanes is Britta Boesing. The rookie from Tuebingen, Germany has the fastest times in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.38 and the 200 yard freestyle at 1:54.70. She also holds the fastest time this season in the 200 yard IM clocking in at 2:06.61.

In the 100 and 200 yard butterfly, freshman Katie Eason posted times of 57.88 and 2:06.41 respectively as she holds the fastest times in these two events on the season.

Tara Erwin and Kirsten Pomerleau also lead the way with two events each for the season.Erwin is the only swimmer on the Hurricane squad to have competed in the 1650 yard freestyle this season, posting a time of 17:04.75. The senior also leads the team this season in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.26. Pomerleau leads with the fastest times this season in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.63 and 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.38

Other swimmers with best times this season include Capria DeVenuto in the 1000 yard freestyle at 10:58.51, and Ashley Knapp with the fastest time in the 200 backstroke at 2:06.47.

The women’s diving team will also be competing in tomorrow’s match-up against FIU. Senior Heather Bounds, who was invited by USA Diving to the second of two 2007 World Championship selection camps, leads the diving squad in the three meter with a score of 341.48, while Jenna Dryer holds the highest score on the season in the one meter at 295.20.

Scouting the Opponent:

FIU’s sophomore Sara Giovannoni has the 19th-fastest 200 breaststroke time in the NCAA this season. Junior diver Lindsay Lowell qualified for the NCAA zone meet in the three meter last week with a score of 296.0, the highest score by an FIU diver since former diver Megan Balkenbush’s school record of 299.33 in 2004.

Next week Miami will be on the road to take on Florida Atlantic Saturday, February 3, at 11 a.m. The diving team will participate in the Orlando All-Star Invitational February 1-4.
