Women's Swimming On the Road to Commence Regular Season Spring Competition

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming team will commence their 2007 Spring competition with two back-to-back meets on the road. The Hurricanes will take on Rice University Friday at 5 p.m. CT, followed by the University of Houston on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
Head coach Christie Shefchunas is excited about the up-coming weekend as she looks forward to some good races.
In the line-up, freshman Britta Boesing will compete in the backstroke, Individual Medley (IM), and the freestyle. The rookie from Germany competed very well against fifth-ranked Texas A&M at the Matt Gribble Invitational, coming away with two second place finishes.
“I look forward to watching Britta”, coach Shefchunas stated. “She is a strong competitor, and I’m anxious to see how she does throughout the weekend”.
New to the Hurricanes’ roster, freshman Marina Dadic from Split, Croatia, made her collegiate debut as she helped Miami to a first place win in the 200 yard freestyle relay against Texas A&M.
“Marina will be exciting to watch in the sprint events”, commented Shefchunas, “along with Kirsten Pomerleau“.
Pomerleau leads the Hurricanes in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle. The sophomore posted first place finishes in both events against Western Kentucky during the Fall season.
Kelly Peloquin, a freshman from Baltimore, Md., will be competing in the breaststroke and IM. During the fall, she posted three first place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke and the 400 yard IM.
Scouting the Opponents:Rice – With three wins out its last four dual meets, Rice has a 7-5 record overall record. The Owls are led by freshman Erin Mattson who posted a win in the 200 yard butterfly against Texas A&M.
Both teams will compete in a 14-event swim meet with 12 individual events and two relays.
Houston – The Cougars racked up wins in their last six meets, posting a 15-3 overall record. Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein leads the team after coming away with wins in eight events, while senior Szintia Szanto leads Houston in the butterfly, breaststroke, and IM.
Next week, the Hurricanes will return to campus as cross-town rival Florida International will visit Coral Gables to compete in a duel match January 25. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
