Hurricanes Set to Take On In-State Rival Florida Atlantic University

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team will take on FAU in a duel meet Friday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool at 3:00 p.m. The Hurricanes look to eclipse a win over the Owls after going down last season.

Miami (2-1, 01 ACC) returns to action after defeating Western Kentucky last Saturday. The Hurricanes won eight events in the contest.

Since the season began seven swimmers have tallied first place finishes in individual meets.

In the meet versus FIU, Tara Erwin clocked in a time of 10:18.30 in the 1000-freestyle, before finishing 5:06.82 in the 500-yard freestyle. Kirsten Pomerleau clocked in at first place with a final time of 24.06 in the 50 yard freestyle.

Ashley Knapp took the top spot in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:06.93, as it marked her second season in a row finishing first in a season-opening meet.

Kelly Peloquin, was the only rookie for the Hurricanes to post first place in two events. She tallied a final time of 4:31.45 in the 400-individual medley, and clocked in 2:22.21 in the 200-breaststroke. In the 200-butterfly, Katie Eason clocked in at 2:07.40

When the Hurricanes took on FSU, Katie Eason took first place in the 200 yards individual medley clocking in at 2:07.50.

Senior Heather Bounds finished first in the three-meter diving board, finishing with a score of 299.85, while junior Jenna Dreyer won the one-meter diving board with a score of 277.87

In last weekend’s meet against Western Kentucky, sophomore Kristen Pomerleau took two first place finishes beginning with the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.94, and the 100 yard freestyle clocking in at 51.38. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Kelly Peloquin clocked in at 1:04.89 for a first place finish.

First place finishes in the diving events include Jenna Dreyer in the one meter springboard with a score of 295.20, while Heather Bounds came away with a score of 327.00 in the three meter diving springboard.

Scouting the Opponent:

The 2005-2006 Sun Belt Champions head to Coral Gables led by Ellie Weberg who finished 4th at the NCAA Championships last season in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. She currently holds the school record in both events – 100 BR (1:01.68) and 200 BR (2:14.48).

Sophomore Lindsey Alexander set the record her freshman season in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.39.

As a freshman, Diver Lauren Harvath also set a record as a freshman in the 1 and 3 meter, while Eren Onurlu holds the school record in the 50 freestyle for the men with a time of 20.18.

Friday’s meet will reunite many alumni of the university, including Miami’s 1975 and 1976 National Championship Swimmers to kick-off this year’s 2006 homecoming weekend.
