Vallverdu Claims 2006 Crimson Tide Championship Title

Oct. 29, 2006

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –

Miami sophomore Daniel Vallverdu won the 2006 Crimson Tide Fall Championship top flight singles title Sunday with 6-2, 6-1 win over Mississippi State’s Pjotrs Necajevs as the Hurricanes wrapped up play at the three-day tournament held at the University of Alabama.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Vallverdu claimed the championships after posting an overall singles record of 3-1 at the invite, which, including the Hurricanes, featured six different teams – Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, UAB and host Alabama – playing four doubles and eight singles matches against each other.

Despite playing in a team-versus-team format, the matches only count towards a player’s individual records and are not considered team competitions.

“Daniel got better and better throughout the weekend,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “He is becoming a better player every day and seems to be finishing more points at the net.”

As a team, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami won 12 of the 28 singles matches played.

“Along with Daniel, I think Vivek (Subramanian) is someone who has really improved over the past few months and it really showed this weekend,” said Rincon of Subramanian, who posted an overall record of 3-1 over the weekend.

“Our new guys also got to play a lot of matches against great competition,” added Rincon.
