Hurricanes Open 2006-2007 Season against FIU

Miami, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming team defeated FIU in their 2006-2007 season opener Friday afternoon at the Bay Vista Aquatic Center.

Miami opened the meet to capture first place in ten of eleven events over the host team.

The 400-medley relay was the first event to kick off the day, as Miami clocked in first and second place wins. The relay team of senior Ashley Knapp, sophomore Magda Waszkiewicz, sophomore Katie Eason and sophomore Kirsten Pomerleau clocked in a time of 3:55.53 to finish first.

Following in second place, sophomores Maggie Ravenna and Tina Rau, senior Nancy Gajos, and sophomore Jennifer Powell clocked in at 4:01.95.

In the second event, the Hurricanes dominated first, second, and third finish in the 1000 yard freestyle. Senior Tara Erwin placed first with 10:18.30, followed by Capria De Venuto clocking in at 10:44.20. In third place, Sarah Lozier finished 11:04.86.

Emerson Davis clocked in 1:57.07 in the 200 yard freestyle placing second, while in the 50 yard freestyle, Kirsten Pomerleau clocked in at first place with a final time of 24.06.

For the second season opener in a row, Ashley Knapp took the top spot in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:06.93.

Kirsten Pomerleau won the 50-freestyle with a time of 24.06 before taking an additional first place victory in the 100- freestyle with a time of 52.91.

Senior Tara Erwin and freshman Kelly Peloqin also turned in first place wins in two events. In the 1000-freestyle, Erwin came in with a time of 10:18.30 before finishing 5:06.82 in the 500-yard freestyle. Peloquin, the only rookie to post first place in two events, tallied a final time of 4:31.45 in the 400-individual medley, and clocked in 2:22.21 in the 200-breaststroke.

Freshman Katie Eason was the second rookie on the Hurricane squad to place first in an event. In the 200-butterfly, Eason clocked in at 2:07.40

In the final event of the day, Miami capped off the day with their final win in the 400-freestyle relay. Led by junior Emerson Davis, followed by freshman Tina McIntyre, Ashley Knapp, and junior Capria DeVenuto, the Hurricanes finished at 3:40.00 to moving on to defeat FIU.

The Hurricanes return to action for two meets starting Friday, Oct.27. Miami will compete in their first home meet against in-state rival, and ACC foe Florida State. Meet time is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.. On Saturday, Miami will face Western Kentucky University at 1:00 p.m.
