RALIEGH, N.C. – the eventual game-winning goal in the 57th minute of play, Miami dropped its first ACC match of the season Thursday afternoon falling 1-0 to NC State in Raleigh, N.C.

The lone goal of the match came at the 56:32 mark when NC State’s (6-1-2, 1-0-0 ACC) Heather O’Rourke headed in a free kick from teammate Katie Ruiz past Miami (6-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) goalkeeper Lauren McAdam.

“I thought Lauren was great in today’s game,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro of the UM keeper who finished with four saves in net. “She really made some big time saves. Unfortunately, it was not enough for us to pull off the victory. NC State was a strong physical team that capitalized off a mistake and scored on one of the best goals off a header I have seen all year. We had a mix up on our marking responsibility and allowed an opportunity inside the box.”

“The ACC is a very unforgiving conference and each detail needs to be covered mentally and physically,” Taliaferro added. “We take responsibility for this game as players and a team and look forward to getting back on the field.”

Suffering their first shutout of the season, the Hurricanes battled the Wolfpack in a back-and-forth offensive effort which saw both teams take six and five shots on goal, respectively. The Hurricanes stay in the state of North Carolina this weekend in preparation for Sunday’s match at fourth-ranked UNC.

The Miami-North Carolina contest, scheduled to begin at 12 noon can be seen live online through ACC Select, a new online video stream presented by the Atlantic Coast Conference in parternship with Raycom Sports and Lincoln Financial Sports.
