July 10, 2006

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three Hurricanes were named to the inaugural All-ACC Academic Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Each of the league’s 11 schools that sponsor swimming and diving is represented on the team.

Senior diver Melanie Rinaldi, junior diver Heather Bounds and freshman swimmer Christine Zwiegers were all named to the squad.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

Bounds and Rinaldi shared ACC Diver of the Year honors after posting several impressive late-season performances.

Bounds earned Honorable Mention All-America status on both the 10-meter platform and the three-meter springboards at the NCAA Championships earlier this month, as she took 10th in the platform and 12th in the three-meter to help the Hurricanes to a 30th-place finish. The Austin, Texas, native also took first in the platform at the ACC Championships in February.

Rinaldi was also named an Honorable Mention All-American after turning in a 16th-place showing on the one-meter and coming in 14th on the three-meter at the NCAA Championships. The Montreal, Quebec, Canada, native was named the ACC Championship’s Most Valuable Diver after taking gold on the one-meter and silver on the three-meter.

Zwiegers posted Miami’s top times in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard butterfly events. At the ACC Championships, Zwiegers swam the anchor leg of the Hurricanes’ 200-yard medley relay that broke the school record by nearly two seconds. She finished fifth in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events at the league championships.
