Hurricanes Advance in NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Third-seeded University of Miami junior Luigi D’Agord updended Illinois’ 24th-ranked Kevin Anderson 7-6 (3), 6-3 Thursday afternoon to advance to the Round of 16 at the 2006 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships held on the campus of Stanford University.
Along with the singles victory, D’Agord also paired with freshman teammate Daniel Vallverdu Thursday evening to knock off Cal’s Conor Niland and Tyler Browne 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the First Round of the 2006 NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championships.
Vying for an opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals of both tournaments, D’Agord will take on 30th-ranked Clement Reix of ACC rival Clemson Friday morning at 10 a.m. PST in singles and, along with Vallverdu, will return in the afternoon to face the winner of Thursday night’s match between Georiga’s John Isner and Antonio Ruiz and Rice’s Konstain Haerle and Robert Searle in doubles at 6:30 p.m. PST.
D’Agord’s win over Anderson improves his overall record to 36-4 on the year, tying the second-highest single season win total in school history, and extends his unbeaten streak to 21-consecutive matches.
