Miami Advances to NCAA Second Round with 4-0 win over Manhattan

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami clinched the doubles point and won three straight-set singles matches enroute to a 4-0 victory over Manhattan College Saturday afternoon 2006 NCAA Men’s Tennis Coral Gables Regional at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
With the win over the Jaspers (17-8), the Hurricanes (19-4), who are the No. 9 overall seed in the 2006 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships, advance to Sunday’s Regional Championship where they face <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Minnesota, who moved on with a 4-2 win over LSU earlier Saturday. The winner of Sunday’s match – slated for 12 noon – will advance to the tournament’s Round of 16 held May 20-23 on the campus of StanfordUniversity.
Miami clinched the doubles point early on, winning matches on court No. 1 and No. 2.
Finishing first were senior Hurricanes Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) and Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) who defeated junior Zoltan Bus (Arad, Romania) and sophomore Filip Szymik (Stalowa Wola, Poland) 8-5 at the No. 2 position.
Shortly afterwards at the No. 1 spot, UM’s 10th-ranked tandem of junior Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and freshman Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) upended freshman Bogdan Borta (Bacau, Romania) and sophomore Peter Czink (Torokbalint, Hungary) 8-2 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Miami senior John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set win over Jasper freshman K-Ming Lee (Fullerton, Calif.) on the No. 6 court while Miami’s 81st-ranked junior Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) won UM’s third point of the day, downing Manhattan’s Bus 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.
UM’s Hechtman clinched the match point with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set victory over Szymik at the No. 5 slot.
