CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– Miami’s rowing team will return to MiltonHillLake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. this weekend for the Aramark South/Central Sprints Regatta. The two-day regatta is slated to take place Saturday, May 13 thru Sunday, May 14. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Hurricanes have not raced since April 28 when they won two-of-three races against Barry and Duke at the Krome Avenue Quarry in Miami.
Miami has utilized the time away from racing to train hard and find its fastest lineups. Head coach Debra Morgan believes that the work has paid off, “this has been a fast year for us and we’re only getting faster as we come into the last race. We’ve shifted the lineups around a bit which has been beneficial for all of our boats.”
The Hurricanes will have a tough task ahead of them as they will face some of the top teams in the country this weekend. Last year, Miami managed to qualify for the B Final in the Open Four but was only able to qualify in the C Final for the Varsity and Junior Varsity Eights. This year, the team will enter a Varsity and JV Eight as well as a Varsity and Open Four.
“This has been a pivotal year for us in terms of coming together as a team, building confidence and creating a stronger work ethic,” said Morgan. “The student-athletes have really done a tremendous job this season.”
Miami will open competition Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the Open Four, which will be competing against crews from Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan and Virginia (B) in the first heat. The Varsity Four will race at 10:20 a.m. in Heat 3 against Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, UCF and Iowa. The JV Eight will race boats from Indiana, Louisville, Virginia and Wisconsin in Heat 2 beginning at 10:40 a.m. In the headlining event which has 21 crews spread across four heats, Miami’s Varsity Eight will race at 11:30 a.m. in Heat 3 against crews from North Carolina, Louisville, Minnesota and Notre Dame.
Preliminary heats will take place Saturday morning. The Semifinals/Repechages will begin at 2:00 p.m. the same day. Finals begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
