BLACKSBURG, Va. –
Fourteenth-ranked Miami won five of six singles matches while sweeping the doubles point to down No. 54 Virginia Tech 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The win over the Hokies (12-11, 3-6 ACC) marks <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami’s (15-3, 7-2 ACC) ninth victory in it’s last 10 matches.
In singles, UM’s fifth-ranked Luigi D’Agord knocked off Arvid Puranen 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 1 while Daniel Vallverdu defeated the Hokies’ Alexei Sergeev 6-4, 6-1 on court No. 2.
At the No. 3 position, Miami’s 72nd-ranked Josh Cohen downed 125th-ranked Albert Larregola 6-4, 6-0.
Miami’s Eric Hechtman won at the No. 5 spot, upending David Rosenfeld 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) and John Hoyes defeated Brandon Corace 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3) on court No. 6.
The Hurricanes claimed all three double matches led by UM’s 30th-ranked duo of D’Agord and Vallverdu’s 8-5 win over Christian Guevara and Brent Wilkins at the No. 1 spot.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday hosting WakeForest at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter at 1 p.m.
