Hurricanes Top Denver 7-0 in Non-Conference Action

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – The 14th ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team won its fifth straight match with a 7-0 sweep over visiting Denver in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. The Hurricanes improve to 10-2 overall while the Pioneers fall to 10-5 on the season. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Senior Tim Krebs opened up singles competition by giving up only two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory over Nejc Smole at the No. 3 position.
Seventh ranked junior Luigi D’Agord topped No. 89 Adam Holmstrom, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot while freshman Danny Vallverdu defeated Niklas Persson 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Senior Eric Hechtman defeated Viktor Zetterholm, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 position before senior John Hoyes outlasted Steve Flaks 3-6, 6-2 (10-6) at the No.5 slot.
Sophomore Vivek Subramanian closed singles competition with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Aljosa Nipic at the No. 6 position.
Miami clinched the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. UM’s 48th ranked D’Agord/Vallverdu pair topped Denver’s 71st ranked tandem of Holmstrom and Persson 8-2 at the No. 2 slot. Junior Josh Cohn and Hechtman then paired up to defeat Nipic and Zetterholm 8-5 to clinch the doubles point at the No. 3 position.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday, March 24 when they travel to BostonCollege for an 11:30 a.m. match.
