Hosts Perform Well on Third Day of Hurricane Invitational

(hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field team competed in the Hurricane Invitational Saturday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.  The Hurricanes won five events and were led by India Ransom (Largo, Md.) who was a double winner, taking the 100 meter dash (11.54) and was part of the winning 4×100 meter relay.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The 4×100 meter relay, which qualified for the NCAA regional running 44.16, included Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), Krista Simkins (Wissahickon, Pa.) and Charlette Greggs (Miami, Fla.).  Greggs was also the top collegiate finisher in the 200 meters, with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 23.73.

 

The Hurricane middle distance runners turned in a solid one-two performance in both the 800-meter and 1500-meter runs.  Ginou Etienne (Miami, Fla.) took the 800-meter in 2:09.06 an NCAA regional qualifying time.  Ena Leufroy (Atlanta, Ga.) placed second, running 2:11.31. In the 1500-meter, Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) ran 4:35.65 to take first and was followed by Amanda Ganser at 4:38.23 who took second.

 

In the field events Viktoria Andonova (Coral Springs, Fla.) took second in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m. In the long jump, Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) and Tabia Charles coming off their all-American performances, took first and second in the long jump.  Faluade and Charles jumped 6.33m and 6.15m respective, both marks which qualified them for the NCAA regional meet.

 

In the throws, Akera Lathan placed third in the shot put with a mark of 14.60m.  Khadija Talley placed second in the discus throw, breaking her own school record with a mark of 50.28m.  Both performances are NCAA regional marks.

 

The Hurricanes compete next at the Pepsi Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. on April 1st.
