Miami Finishes Fifth at NCAA Indoor Championships

Fayetteville, Ark. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field finished tied for fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Hurricanes were led by strong performances by Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) who finished second in the 400-meter dash and broke her own school record which she set yesterday, and Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ont.) who finished third in the triple jump, breaking her own school record.
The fifth place finish for the Hurricanes is the second straight top five finish, along with last years third place finish.
Darden, ran the 400-meter in 52.17 just .01 of the winning mark. With the second place finish Darden earned her 11th All-American distinction. Darden was also part of the fourth place 4×400 meter relay team, that also broke the school record, running in 3:30.91. Ginou Etienne (Miami, Fla.), Charlette Greggs (Miami, Fla.) and Krista Simkins (Wissahickon, Pa.) were all part of the relay and each member earns All-American status.
The All-American honor is Darden’s 12th, Greggs’ 10th, Etienne’s fourth and the first for Simkins.
The jumpers were also excellent on this day, as along with Charles’ record breaking mark of 13.65m (44-09.50), Brenda Faluade finished third, jumping 13.33m (43-09.00) her personal best.Both performances earn All-American status, Charles’ eighth and Faluade’s fifth.
The Hurricanes return to competition again March 16-18 at the Hurricane Invititational in Coral Gables, Fla.
