Hurricanes Set for NCAA Zone B Diving Championships

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami diving squad is set to compete in the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships which are slated to take place Friday, March 10 thru Sunday, March 12 in the LancasterAquaticCenter on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The meet will commence with the men’s one-meter and the women’s three-meter beginning at 12:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The top 13 men and top nine women will advance to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The women’s championship will be hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens March 16-18. Georgia Tech will be the host of the men’s meet, March 23-25 in Atlanta.
To have qualified for the zone diving meet a diver must have achieved the NCAA qualifying standards for minimum point totals in bona fide competition in at least one event. The NCAA has five different zones, A-E.
Senior Melanie Rinaldi, juniors Heather Bounds and Derek Starks, sophomore Jenna Dreyer and freshman Tess Waresmith will be representing Miami. 22 schools in total will be competing at the Zone-B Championship.
Rinaldi is coming off a strong performance at the ACC Championships where she was named the meet’s Most Valuable Diver after winning the 1-meter and coming in second on the 3-meter.
Starks was also tabbed the ACC Championship’s Most Valuable Diver after winning the 1-meter and 10-meter platform and coming in second on the 3-meter board.
Bounds took gold on the 10-meter platform at the ACC Championships while Dreyer came in third on both the 1 and 3-meter boards. Waresmith turned in zone qualifying marks on the 1 and 3-meter in her first season of collegiate competition.
