Feb. 14, 2006

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving squad is set for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship which is slated to begin Wednesday, Feb. 15 and run through Saturday, Feb. 18 at the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Natatorium.

The Hurricanes finished the season with a 3-5 overall record and a 0-3 mark in the ACC. As always, Miami will send a strong contingent of 15 swimmers and five divers to compete in 22 events, including five relays.

The divers are led by senior Melanie Rinaldi, who won the three-meter championship at last weekend’s All-Star Challenge, and sophomore Jenna Dreyer, who was tabbed the 2005 Most Valuable Diver after claiming the 1-meter championship and finishing second in the 3-meter at last year’s ACC Championship.

Junior Derek Starks will compete on all boards in the men’s diving events. Starks returns to action after claiming the one-meter championship at the All-Star Challenge last weekend.

Zwiegers, a freshman, is seeded fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.74 and ninth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.67. She has been ranked in the ACC’s Top-10 in both events throughout the season.

Knapp is seeded 14th in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:04.47 and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 2:04.47. Knapp, a junior, set a new 100-yard backstroke record at last year’s ACC Championships when she touched the wall in a time of 57.23.

Junior Andrea Hughes is seeded ninth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.66.

At last season’s women’s ACC Championship, Maryland tallied 655 points to win championship, while Virginia placed second with 590.5 points. North Carolina finished the meet in third place with 491 points, Florida State in fourth with 433, Virginia Tech in fifth with 357.5, Georgia Tech in sixth with 286.5, Clemson in seventh with 219, NC State in eighth with 194.5, Duke in ninth with 180 and Miami in tenth with 176.
