Hurricanes Pick Up Two Victories in Quad Meet

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami swimming and diving team picked up victories over New Orleans and Tampa but fell to in-state rival Florida Atlantic in a quad meet Saturday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

The Hurricanes (3-4, 0-3 ACC) defeated New Orleans 245-40 and Tampa 225-62. Miami, however, couldn’t top Florida Atlantic who claimed a157-141 victory.

 

The meet opened up with a Miami win in the 200-medley relay. The Hurricane relay of junior Ashley Knapp, freshman Magda Waszkiewicz, junior Andrea Hughes and freshman Christine Zwiegers out-touched FAU for first place, coming in a season-best time of 1:46.66.

 

The Hurricanes finished in second and third place in the 100-breastroke. Waszkiewicz touched the wall second in a time of 1:05.97, Miami’s best time this season, before redshirt freshman Melinda Hochard came in third in a time of 1:07.19.

 

The 200-butterfly was another close race. Hughes, coming in a time of 2:05.57, out-touched FAU’s Shawna Griffith who finished with a time of 2:05.95. Junior Capria DeVenuto came in third in a time of 2:10.02.

 

Hughes likewise took the 100-butterfly event finishing nearly one second ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 57.18. Zwiegers came in third in a time of 58.39.

 

Zwiegers, who has ranked among the ACC Top-10 in the 50-freestyle all season, claimed yet another victory in the event. She clocked in a time of 23.93–nearly an NCAA B championship qualifying standard.  She also won the 100-freestyle with a team-best time of 52.15.

 

Junior Tara Erwin finished second in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:24.10 before Waszkiewicz and Hochard once again finished in second and third in the 200-breastroke event. Waszkiewicz clocked in a time of 2:23.37 while Hochard followed with a time of 2:23.79.

 

Sophomore diver Jenna Dreyer claimed first place finishes on both the one and three-meter boards. She tallied NCAA Zone qualifying scores of 297. 53 on the one-meter and 285.65 on the three-meter.

 

Junior Heather Bounds finished second on both boards. She turned in an NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 275.75 on the one-meter and tallied a score of 248.75 on the three-meter.

 

Junior Kristen Lunak finished second in a close battle in the 400-individual medley where she clocked in a season-best time of 4:35.01.

 

The meet marked Miami’s final regular season competition before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships slated to begin Feb. 15 in College Park, Md.
