Hurricanes Host Quad Meet in Regular Season Finale

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami swimming and diving squad will host a quad meet featuring Florida Atlantic, Tampa and New Orleans in its regular season finale Saturday, Jan. 28. Competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

Saturday’s meet will mark Miami’s final regular season competition before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships slated to begin Feb. 15 in College Park, Md.

 

The Hurricanes (1-4, 0-3 ACC) return to action after earning their first win of the season–a 139-97 victory over cross-town rival FIU last Saturday. Miami won nine-of-13 events in the meet.

 

Miami is led by freshman Christine Zwiegers who is ranked in the Top 10 in the ACC in both the 50-freestlye (8th, 23.67) and the 100-butterfly (6th, 55.74). Junior Andrea Hughes is ranked 10th in the 100-butterfly with a time of 56.66.

 

The Hurricane divers have been ranked in among Top 10 in the ACC in both the one-meter and three-meter boards all season. On the one-meter, sophomore Jenna Dreyer, who held the top slot for most of the season, is now ranked second with a score of 309.43. Senior Melanie Rinaldi is ranked fourth with a score of 299.40 while junior Heather Bounds is seventh with a score of 291.60.

 

Rinaldi leads the divers on the three-meter where she is ranked fifth with a score of 307.55 followed by Dreyer in sixth with a score of 306.53 and Bounds in seventh with a score of 300.00.

 

Miami’s only male diver, junior Derek Starks, is ranked ninth on the one-meter with a score of 317.50 and eighth on the three-meter with a 350.35 mark. 

 

Florida Atlantic heads to Coral Gables for its final regular season meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships Feb. 16. Last weekend, the Owls fell to FloridaState and picked up wins over Florida A&M and Indian River.

 

The Owls are led by former Hurricane Lauren Shue who was tabbed the Sun Belt Conference Performer of the Week after winning both the 500 and 1000-freestyle events at Florida State.

 

Tampa, ranked 12th in the latest CSCAA Division II polls, returns to the pool after defeating Rollins and Saint Leo in its final home meet of the season.

 

The Spartans’ 200-medley and 800-freestyle relays have turned in NCAA Division II qualifying times of 1:47.44 and 7:42.65, respectively.

 

New Orleans picked up two victories over Centenary and Arkansas-Little Rock in a tri-meet last Saturday. Sarah Gros won two events, the 500 and 1000-freestyle, during the meet as did Erica Granesater who was first in both the 100 breastroke and butterfly events.
