Hurricanes Conclude Action at FIU Spring Classic

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>MIAMI, Fla. – The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team claimed two doubles and four singles victories over No. 30 Florida International on the final day of competition at the FIU Spring Classic Sunday afternoon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The three-day tournament was conducted in a hidden dual format where no team scores were allotted and results only counted for individual records.
Miami’s doubles tandem of sophomore Audra Cohen and junior Audrey Banada gave up only one game en route to an 8-1 victory over Egle Petrauskaite and Shilla D’Armas. Senior Melissa Applebaum paired up with sophomore Patricia Starzyk to defeat FIU’s Desanka Jovanovic/Courtney Johnson pair, 8-6.
In singles action, Cohen downed Petrauskaite in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, as No. 40 Banada defeated Nikkita Fountain, 6-2, 7-6.
Starzyk picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jovanovic while sophomore Caren Seenauth downed Marijana Cutuk, 6-2, 7-5.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday, Jan. 27 when they host Florida Atlantic at 12:00 p.m. in the NeilSchiffTennisCenter.
