Hurricanes Take On Seminoles in Dual Meet

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami swimming and diving team is set to face in-state rival FloridaState in an Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the BobbyE.LeachCenter in Tallahassee. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The Hurricanes (0-3, 0-2 ACC) return to the pool after finishing third in last weekend’s Matt Gribble Invitational.

 

Leading the way for the UM’s swimmers are freshman Christine Zwiegers and junior Andrea Hughes. Zwiegers is ranked eighth in the ACC in the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.67. She is also fourth in the 100-butterfly with a time of 55.74. Hughes, who won the event at the Matt Gribble Invitational, is sixth in the 100-butterfly with a time of 56.66.

 

In the diving events, sophomore Jenna Dreyer continues to hold the ACC’s best score in the 1-meter, with a 309.43. Senior Melanie Rinaldi is fourth in the event with a score of 299.40 followed by junior Heather Bounds in ninth with a score of 276.65. 

 

Both Rinaldi and Bounds are also among the league leaders in the 3-meter, ranked fifth and sixth respectively.

 

The Seminoles (8-1, 4-0) currently sits atop the ACC Standings and lead the all-time series 17-11.  FSU picked up a 129-96 win in their last dual-meet on Nov. 12, 2004.

 

Both teams met earlier in the season at the Georgia Tech Invitational which the Seminoles won with 1076.50 points. The Hurricanes finished in fifth with 287 points.

 

FSU’s Carrie Ellis and Lauren Sprag lead the ACC in the 100-freestyle (49.32) and the 100-butterfly (54.56), respectively while Brittany Lerew is atop the ACC in the 3-meter (364.85).  The Seminoles have turned in the ACC’s best times in three out of five relays, including the 200-freestyle, 200-medley and 400-medley relays.
