Hurricanes Fit In Thursday Practice Before Katrina Arrives

Aug. 25, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami football team practiced just hours before Hurricane Katrina’s expected landfall Thursday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields. Steady rain fell and winds increased throughout the session, but the Hurricanes carried on. Lightning and a heavy downpour in the final 15 minutes of practice chased the Hurricanes from practice field.

“We really needed something like (the weather) to get out in,” head coach Larry Coker said. “The guys really had a lot of spunk and energy. I think it’s good to get them outdoors, especially with the weather being rough tonight.”

Only 11 days remain until the Sept. 5 season opener against Florida State, a fact that most likely will not change in spite of inclement weather. Hurricane Katrina arrived at a juncture when practice time is especially crucial and timely preparation is imperative. The rough weather had little effect on the performance during practice.

“I was with the offense for most of practice and we had no muffed snaps,” Coker said. “We had guys running and catching, and running the offense. I was pretty pleased.”

Although classes have been cancelled for tomorrow, Coker still hopes a break in the weather may provide an opportunity to practice tomorrow afternoon.

Notes: Coker revealed that no starters have been declared for the opener yet.
