Hurricanes Start Preparations For Louisiana State

Dec. 19, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Classes are over and finals are done for the University of Miami football team, which means all the Hurricanes’ focus has shifted to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl matchup with the No. 10 Louisiana State Tigers on Dec. 30 in Atlanta. UM had its first full day of practicing against LSU’s schemes at the Greentree Practice Fields Monday afternoon.

“Our guys practiced pretty well,” head coach Larry Coker said. “We introduced LSU today and we’ve been studying the tape before, but this is the first day we’ve have a full practice of LSU. The guys were spirited, and we really had a lot of fun.”

Monday was the beginning of a busy week for the Hurricanes, who have to prepare, practice and install their packages for LSU before taking a few days off to enjoy the holidays. “We have to get a lot done this week,” Coker said. “We try to get our work done before we go to the bowl game, then it’s repetitive when we get to the bowl site.”

Although word out of the LSU camp is that Tigers backup quarterback Matt Flynn has been taking reps with the first unit in anticipation of the event that starter JaMarcus Russell will be limited due to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, Coker said that Miami’s preparation would be unaffected.

“I think it affects them a lot more than it does us,” Coker said. “We have to prepare as if (Russell) is going play. If he doesn’t, then we’ll adjust from there. They’re really high on (Flynn). Now (Flynn) is going to get full work with the ones. It’s not like the Georgia game when he wasn’t expecting to play and was just put into the game. He’ll be much better prepared and they really like him.”

The Hurricanes coaches and student-athletes will attend their annual banquet this evening and will return to the practice fields on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hurricanes will practice at 2:00 Tuesday at the Greentree Practice Fields.

Notes: Wide receiver Terrell Walden injured his knee in practice and will be undergoing an MRI tonight to determine his prognosis.
