Miami Eric Winston Named Jacobs Blocking Trophy Recipient

Nov. 28, 2005

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami senior Eric Winston has been awarded the 2005 Jacobs Blocking Trophy, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced today.

The Jacobs Blocking Trophy has been awarded annually since 1953 to the player voted the most outstanding blocker in the ACC by a poll of the league’s defensive coordinators. The trophy is given in memory of William P. Jacobs, who served as president of Presbyterian College from 1935 to 1945.

Winston, a 6-7, 312-pound offensive tackle, is a Lombardi Award semifinalist and a three-year starter for the 10th-ranked Hurricanes. Fully recovered from a knee injury that caused him to miss all but four games a year ago, Winston leads a balanced Miami offense that is averaging 368.5 yards and 29.7 points per game.

“It’s a great honor for Eric Winston to receive this award from the ACC,” said Miami head coach Larry Coker. “There are a lot of outstanding offensive linemen in the conference for Eric to receive this, especially after having played the offensive line for a couple of years. We’re very pleased.”

The Midland, Texas, native was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week following the Duke game on Oct. 9 and the North Carolina contest on Oct. 30, and has been the leading grader for Miami several times this season.

Winston is the first Miami player to win the Jacobs Blocking Trophy.
