Hurricanes Fall to Duke and Maryland in Double-Dual Meet

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team fell to Atlantic Coast Conference foes Maryland, 139-96, and Duke, 125-117, in a double-dual meet held at Maryland’s Campus Recreation Center Saturday afternoon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Hurricanes (0-3, 0-2 ACC) went 1-2-3 in both the one and three meter diving events. Senior Melanie Rinaldi won both events with scores of 299.40 and 305.70, respectively. Junior Heather Bounds finished second and the three-meter with a score of 300.00 and also came in second on the one-meter with a score of 276.20. Freshman Tess Waresmith made her collegiate debut by finishing third on both boards. She turned in scores of 263.20 on the one-meter and 252.70 on the three-meter.
Junior Ashley Knapp was the only other Hurricane to claim a first place finish, claiming the top spot in the 200-breaststroke. Knapp touched the wall in a time of 2:04.47.
Freshman Christine Zwiegers continues to swim well for the Hurricanes. She placed second on both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, touching the wall at 24.04 and 52.33 respectively.
Sophomore Capria DeVenuto also grabbed a second place finish in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:08.23.
Junior Tara Erwin and redshirt freshman Melinda Hochard both finished third in their respective events. Erwin turned in a time of 10:26.47 in the 1000-freestyle while Hochard’s time of 2:24.58 in the 200-breastroke nabbed her third place.
Miami finished the meet with a second place finish in the 400-freestyle relay. The relay of Zwiegers, junior Andrea Hughes, DeVenuto and Knapp finished with a time of 3:35.65.
The Hurricanes return to action at the Georgia Tech Invitational that takes place November 18 through November 20 in Atlanta, Ga.
