Hurricanes wrap-up final day of Cougar Classic

Hanahan, S.C. – University of Miami sophomore Jessica Steward (Mystic, Conn.) fired a final round 74, giving her a three-round total of 226 to finish tied for 35th at the Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club (Par 72).
Steward rebounded nicely from an opening round 81 (9-over par), posting a 71 (1-under par) and 74 (2-over par) over the tournament’s two final rounds.
Steward, a Boston College transfer, was joined in the top-50 by junior Josie Shinn (Pinehurst, NC). Shinn, a 2004-05 All-ACC selection, was a model of consistency for the Hurricanes en route to her tied for 42nd finish as she shot 4-over par 76 in each of three rounds for a total of 228.
As a team the Hurricanes finished T-16th, posting rounds of 312, 306 and 311. The tournament, which was originally scheduled to begin on Monday Sept. 12 and run through Tuesday Sept. 13, was moved up a day because of weather concerns brought on by Hurricane Ophelia.
The tournament, which is hosted by the College of Charleston, began on Sunday Sept. 11 with a 36-hole shotgun start and concluded Monday with 18 holes on the 6,084-yard course.
The University of Tennessee came away with a first-place finish in the team portion of the tournament after posting a combined three-round total of 870 (6-over par). UT sophomore Marci Turner, who posted a 2004-05 average of 74, shot a 4-under par total of 212 to claim the tournament’s individual prize. Georgia’s Whitney Wade finished second with a 1-under par 215.
The University of Georgia came in second with a three-round total of 872, while Mallory Hetzel (+1, Georgia), Taylor Leon (+1, Georgia) and Leah Wigger (+1, Virginia) round out the top-five.
Steward’s score was the 12th-best among the 89-golfer field, while Shinn’s was 14th.
