Barrett Captures ACC Shot Put Title

Tallahassee, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) won her second ACC title in as many days placing first in the shot put Friday afternoon at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
The meet is currently in a weather delay.
Barrett, who won the hammer throw on Thursday, recorded an ACC Outdoor Championship meet record of 17.94 meters (58-10.25) in winning the shot put in dominating fashion. The only woman within 10 feet of Barrett’s throw was UM senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) who placed second with a mark of 15.69 meters (51-05.75). Miami scored a total of 21 points in the event with freshman Khadija Talley (Benning, Ga.) placing sixth with a personal-best toss of 14.29 meters (46-10.75).
The Hurricanes scored an additional 10 points in the long jump with three UM jumpers placing in the top-8. Sophomore All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) placed fourth with a mark of 6.02 meters (19-09.00), Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) took fifth with a leap of 5.99 meters (19-08.00) and senior All-American Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) finished eighth with a jump of 5.89 meters (19-04.00).
Miami is currently in first-place in the team standings with 43 points after six events scored. North Carolina is second with 35.50 points.
Several Hurricanes qualified for Saturday’s finals prior to the weather delay.
Junior All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles winning her preliminary heat with a time of 13.48 seconds. Her time was the second fastest of the qualifying round.
The Hurricanes had three women advance to the finals of the 400-meters including sophomore All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central), junior All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) and senior All-American Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas).
Etienne won her qualifying heat in a time 52.52 seconds marking the fastest of the preliminary round, and tying for the second fastest time in the nation this season. Greggs won her heat in time of 53.59, the third fastest of the prelims, while Moore posted the fourth best time of the qualifying round (54.42).
Junior All-American India Ransom (Largo, Md.) and freshman All-American Lauren Austin (Oviedo, Fla.) finished first and second in their preliminary heat of 100-meters to advance to Saturday’s final. Ransom recorded the third fastest preliminary time (11.60) while Austin posted the fourth fastest time (11.77).
In the 1500-meters, junior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) advanced to Saturday’s final placing fifth in the preliminary round with a time of 4:29.73. Schultz is also scheduled to compete in Saturday’s 5000-meter final.
In the heptathlon, Williams moved into the lead after recording mark of 6.26 meters in the long jump. Her jump was good for 930 points giving her a total of 4241 with the javelin and 800-meters remaining. Seward is currently in second with 3983 points.
