UM Draws Opening Round Match Up with Virginia Tech at 2005 ACC Men's Tennis Championships

April 18, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Playing as the tournament’s No. 9 seed, the University of Miami men’s tennis team will take on eighth-seeded Virginia Tech Thursday morning at 9 a.m. in the opening-round match of the 2005 ACC Men’s Tennis Championships at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.

In their inaugural season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, first-year head coach Mario Rincon and the Hurricanes drew the ninth seed after finishing the 2005 regular season with an overall mark of 11-10 and a 2-8 record in conference play.

Fellow ACC newcomers, Virginia Tech, head to the league championship as the No. 8 seed after posting a 13-10 overall record and a 4-6 record in ACC play.

The Hurricanes are led by sophomore Josh Cohen, who was named the ACC Performer of the Week last week after upsetting the nation’s third-ranked player, Ludovic Walter of Duke. Cohen – who is ranked 120th nationally in singles – followed up that performance with a win over No. 32 Mat Cloer of Florida State this past Sunday.

Junior Eric Hechtman posted UM’s best record in singles play this spring, going 14-4 in dual matches, including a 12-3 mark at the No. 3 spot. Hechtman and Cohen were the only two UM players to hold winning records in ACC play, going 5-4 and 6-4, respectively.

Junior Tim Krebs – who is ranked 95th in the country – is 12-7 in singles play this season and along with doubles partner freshman Vivek Subramanian, is ranked 58th in doubles.

Miami has split three matches apiece with the Hokies in the two schools’ six previous meetings.

Early this season, Virginia Tech edged out UM, 4-3, in Coral Gables, taking four-of-six singles matches from the Hurricanes in Miami’s ACC opener March 6.

The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on top-seeded Virginia Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Friday’s match will kick off the 2005 ACC Men’s Tennis Championships, which will conclude Sunday with the championship match slated for 11 a.m.
