Hurricanes Come Up Short in 4-3 Decision to Fifth-Ranked Duke

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the fourth time in conference play this season, the University of Miami men’s tennis team was edged out by an overall score of 4-3 as they fell to fifth-ranked Duke in the regular season home finale Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Against the Blue Devils (16-3, 6-1 ACC), the Hurricanes (11-9, 2-7 ACC) surrendered the doubles point, falling in two-of-three matches, before going on to split three matches apiece with Duke in singles play.
The afternoon began as Duke’s 43rd-ranked duo of Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmermann upended UM’s 58th-ranked tandem of Junior Tim Krebs and freshman Vivek Subramanian 8-1 on the No. 1 doubles court.
The Blue Devils’ Stephen Amritraj and Peter Shults clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 spot with an 8-3 win over Hurricane senior Luis Manrique and freshman Ryan Waits.
In singles play, UM sophomore Josh Cohen – who is ranked 120th nationally in singles – stunned the nation’s third-ranked singles player in Walter with a straight-set, 7-6(3), 6-4, on the No. 1 court.
Duke’s Jonathan Stokke – ranked 118th nationally – took down 95th-ranked Krebs, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3 and UM junior Eric Hechtman defeated Peter Rodrigues, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3.
In the No. 4 slot, junior John Hoyes claimed the Hurricanes’ final point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charles Brezac.
Duke took both the No. 5 and No. 6 matches as Shults downed Subramanian (6-2, 6-2) and Ned Samuelson defeated Manrique (6-0, 6-3), respectively.
The Hurricanes will conclude the 2005 regular season Friday, April 15 when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to battle with in-state ACC rival Florida State.
