Hurricanes Finish Second at Florida State Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing squad finished second with 81 total team points at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships Saturday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Hurricanes, who claimed the Shirly B. Neggard Trophy given to the team who scores the most points last season, came in second behind UCF.
Despite not having their full-strength squad, the Hurricanes won two events and placed second in two more on the race course that stretched 1,815 meters on the waters of the TampaBypassCanal.
The intrastate event featured crews from BarryUniversity, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida State University, Florida Tech, JacksonvilleUniversity, NovaSoutheasternUniversity, RollinsCollege, StetsonUniversity, University of CentralFlorida, University of Florida, University of Miami, University of Southern Florida and the University of Tampa.
Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Eights came in second behind UCF with times of 6:28.2 and 6:45.2, respectively.
The Junior Varsity `A’ crew and the JV `B’ crew crossed the finish line first and second ahead of UCF, Nova Southeastern, FIT and Stetson. The `A’ boat finished with a time of 7:38.1 before the `B’ boat crossed the finish line with a time of 7:44.20.
The Varsity Four finished first with a time of 7:22.9 ahead of second place finisher Nova Southeastern (7:23. 6) and third place Barry (7:32.7). UCF, FIT and Jacksonville rounded out the bottom three.
The Novice Eight finished second behind UCF with a time of 7:03.9, while the Novice Four finished in third place behind Tampa and FIT with a time of 8:09.2.
“Obviously we had a great day in the fours,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “But we are disappointed to get second place. We rowed strong and performed to our potential.”
The Hurricanes return to action Saturday, April 23rd when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
