Hurricanes Travel West for San Diego Crew Classic

April 1, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing squad will travel to the state of California this weekend for the 32nd-annual San Diego Crew Classic on the waters of Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. April 2-3.

The two-day regatta, which will take place at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay, will begin at 7:30 a.m. (PT) on Saturday and end Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

The San Diego Crew Classic has been internationally recognized as one of the finest regattas in the world. The first San Diego Crew Classic featured 300 competitors in 12 races. This year’s event will have more than 3,400 athletes ranging from juniors to masters.

This will mark UM’s third trip to the San Diego Crew Classic. At the 2004 regatta, the Hurricanes’ Varsity Eight crew finished second in the Grand Final of the Cal Cup with a time of 7:16.65. This season, the Hurricanes are fielding both a Varsity and Junior Varsity Eight crew.

Miami’s Varsity Eight will compete with 15 other crews for the Women’s Cal Cup. The Hurricanes are slated to race in the third heat at 8:10 a.m. (PT) on Saturday where they will go head-to-head with Sacramento State, St. Joseph’s, Temple and UC-Irvine.

UM’s Junior Varsity Eight will race in the second heat of the Women’s JV race, which will feature 18 junior varsity squads. The race is slated to begin at 10:10 a.m. (PT), with Miami going head-to-head with Washington State, Notre Dame, Stanford, San Diego State and UC -Irvine.

The top two finishers from each heat in Saturday’s preliminary races will move on to Sunday’s Grand Final while the third and fourth finishers move on to the Petite Final.

“While this is a big regatta and a great chance for us to race crews from all over the nation, it’s still early in the season,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “Our crews are developing well, but are still young racers and are up against some tough competition. We’re excited to see where we stack up as we progress through the weekend.”
