Velazquez Named ACC Most Valuable Diver

ATLANTA, Ga. –

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami diver Miguel Velazquez was tabbed the 2005 Most Valuable Diver, after winning the 10-meter platform with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 574.85 to complete his sweep of the diving events on the final day of competition at the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the GeorgiaTechAquaticCenter Saturday evening. Velazquez won the ACC title on the one-meter and three-meter boards on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Miami sophomore Derek Starks placed second with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 569.55 while Georgia Tech’s Evan Stowers rounded out the medalists with a score of 489.70.

 

The Hurricanes, who field only a diving squad, finished the meet in 10th place with 73 total points while Virginia won the team championship for the seventh-consecutive time with 726.50 points. FloridaState placed second with 580 points. Georgia Tech finished the meet in third place with 429 points, North Carolina in fourth with 412, Clemson in fifth with 323, NC State in sixth with 321, Virginia Tech in seventh with 289.5, Maryland in eighth with 273 and Duke in ninth with 132 points.
