Divers Claim First and Second at ACC Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. – University of Miami senior diver Miguel Velazquez recorded a score of 365.40 to claim first-place honors on the one-meter springboard while sophomore Derek Starks placed second with a mark of 350.05 at the 2005 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Thursday evening. Both divers posted NCAA Zone qualifying scores.
Georgia Tech’s Tony Burkhardt finished third with 345.95 points rounding out the medalists.
The Hurricanes are currently tenth with 37 points while Virginia finished the second day of competition in first place with a total of 250 points. Florida State is second with 204 points, while North Carolina is third with 180.5 points. Georgia Tech stands in fourth with 158 points, Clemson is fifth (146), NC State is sixth (130), Virginia Tech is seventh (95.5), Maryland is eighth (92), and Duke is ninth (71).
Starks finished the morning’s preliminaries with a score 344.30 while Velazquez posted a score of 339.57 to become the respective first and second seeds in the finals. Sophomore Toby Brooks turned in a preliminary score of 205.70 for 26th place.
The Hurricanes return to the pool Friday afternoon for the three-meter preliminary competition that begins at 1:00 p.m. with finals to commence at 7:00 p.m. Diving results can be followed via live stats on Ramblinwreck.com.
