Bounds Wins Silver; Ferenczi Ties School Record At ACC Championships

Sophomore Diver Heather Bounds won a silver medal in the platform event while senior Katalin Ferenczi tied her school record in the 200-yard backstroke to lead the University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team to a tenth place finish in their inaugural ACC Championships Saturday evening at the Georgia Teach Aquatic Center.
Senior Ferenczi tied her own school record in the 200-yard backstroke, which she set in 2004, when she finished in ninth place with an NCAA `B’ cut time of 2:01.69.
Bounds turned in a score of 423.75 behind FSU’s Courtney McClow, who won the platform title with a score of 438.75. Freshman Jenna Dreyer was just out of medal contention when she finished fourth with a score of 388.20. Both Bounds’ and Dreyer’s scores qualified them for the NCAA Zone Meet. Dreyer was tabbed the 2005 Most Valuable Diver, after placing first on the one-meter board and second in the three-meter.
Also turning in NCAA `B’ standard times where freshman Lauren Shue and sophomore Tara Erwin in the 1650-yard freestyle. Shue clocked in the Hurricanes’ top 1650 time this season with a time of 16:46.23 for 11th place, while Erwin turned in a time of 16:52.82 for 14th place.
Sophomore Nancy Gajos moved up to twelfth in the 200-yard butterfly after touching the wall with a season-best time of 2:05.54 in the `B’-Final. Gajos was seeded 16th in the morning’s preliminaries.
Also returning for the evening session in the 200-yard backstroke were freshman Taylor McFarlane and sophomore Ashley Knapp. McFarlane clocked in a season-best time of 2:03.79 for 14th place while Knapp, who set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke Friday night, turned in a career-best time of 2:07.73 for 16th place.
Freshman Amy Caron was <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami’s lone representative in the evening session of the 200-yard breastroke, coming in 24th with a season-best time of 2:27.36.
The Hurricanes’ 400 freestyle relay team of Gajos, McFarlane, freshman Emerson Davis and Ferenczi finished in 10th with a season-best time of 3:32.19. Gajos set a career mark time of 53.47 in the 100 freestyle as the relay’s leadoff leg.
Maryland tallied 655 points to its’ first-ever ACC swimming crown, while Virginia placed second with 590.5 points. North Carolina finished the meet in third place with 491 points, FloridaState in fourth with 433, Virginia Tech in fifth with 357.5, Georgia Tech in sixth with 286.5, Clemson in seventh with 219, NC State in eighth with 194.5, Duke in ninth with 180 and Miami in tenth with 176.
