Hurricanes' Practice a 'Great Way to Spend a Sunday Afternoon'

Aug. 15, 2004

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami’s head football coach Larry Coker could not think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than practicing football.

His team donned full pads for the second straight day for a two-hour practice at the Greentree Practice Facility on the campus of the University of Miami.

“Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” Coker said following Sunday’s practice. “We could have been on the beach, but I would rather be here. We had a two-minute situational drill, and it was another full pad day for us.”

Coker commented on the development of freshman wide receiver Lance Leggett and the conversion of Devin Hester to defensive back.

“Some of the young guys are really starting to come along,” Coker said. “Lance Leggett is showing some signs of being able to do some special things at the wide receiver position. Devin Hester seems to be improving at the cornerback position.”

The Hurricanes’ veterans are also making an impression on the practice field. “The veteran guys seem to be stepping up and playing pretty well, and that is certainly what you look for,” Coker said.

Miami’s first two-a-day practice is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday with the Hurricanes practicing in shells (shoulder pads, helmets and shorts) and again at 3:30 p.m. in full pads.
