Hurricanes Finish Fifth at Georgia Tech Invitational

Atlanta, Ga. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team finished fifth at the Georgia Tech Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The women’s team closed the meet with 411 total points, while the men’s diving squad finished with 99 points.
Senior Miguel Velazquez and sophomore Derek Starks swept the platform diving event, taking first and second place respectively. Velazquez finished with a score of 592.70 while Starks earned a score of 564.90; both marks were career-highs.
The women’s diving duo of sophomore Heather Bounds and freshman Jenna Dreyer also finished the meet with success on the platform. Bounds placed second with a career-high score of 398.24, followed by Dreyer in third with a score of 385.75.
The Hurricanes also performed well in the 200 backstroke. Senior Katalin Ferenczi placed fifth with a 2:03.31, followed by freshman Taylor McFarlane in a time of 2:05.75. Senior Lindsay Knapp rounded out the finalists with a time of 2:08.56, which placed her eighth.
Senior Manon van Rooijen placed fifth in the 100 freestyle, touching in a time of 51.99, less than one second off her season best time, before sophomore Nancy Gajos’ 200 butterfly time of 2:05.39 also placed her fifth.
The women’s squad finished ahead of interstate rival FAU for the second time this season, while also topping Kentucky and Georgia. The men’s squad finished ahead of Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. Florida claimed the Georgia Tech Invitational with the most points in both the men and women’s competition.
The Hurricanes return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel to College Station, Texas for the U.S. Open from December 2nd through the 4th.
