Fresh off a pair of wins at the 2004 Miami Jam Friday and Sunday, the University of Miami women’s basketball team will take to the road for the first time this season Tuesday, traveling to West Hartford, Conn. to take on the University of Hartford at the Reich Family Pavilion at 7 p.m.

Head coach Ferne Labati and the Hurricanes (2-0) downed Gardner-Webb, 65-47, in the season opener Friday night and returned Sunday to upend TCU, 68-57, in the Championship Game of the Miami Jam.

Junior Tamara James was named the tournament’s MVP, averaging a tournament-best 18 points in two games over the weekend, while senior Yalonda McCormick was selected to the Miami Jam All-Tournament team.

Hartford will make their 2004-05 season debuts Tuesday night against the Hurricanes. The Hawks return nine players and four starters, including seven of the top eight scorers, to a team that posted the most wins (18) in school history last season.

Among those returnees include junior guard Erika Messam, who averaged 10.9 points per game last season, and sophomore guard Ikea Witt, who averaged 10.3 points per contest in 2003-04.

Tuesday’s game with Hartford will be carried live over the airwaves on WVUM 90.5 FM, the home of Hurricane basketball for the 2004-05 season, and can be heard live on hurricanesports.com.
