Hurricanes Perform Well in Second Day of Georgia Tech Invitational

Atlanta, Ga. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team pulled in career best times and another first place finish in the diving events on the second day of the Georgia Tech Invitational, Saturday evening at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The women’s team is currently fifth with 257 total points, while the men’s diving squad is seventh with 67 points.
The Hurricanes opened up the evening by placing 11th in the 200 medley relay. The relay team of Ashley Knapp, Adrien Ferguson, Nancy Gajos and Emerson Davis touched in a time of 1:51.41.
Sophomore Nancy Gajos placed sixth in the 100 butterfly, besting her prelims time of 58.02 with a 57.86.
Knapp brought home a career best performance in the 100 backstroke, touching in fourth place with a career best time of 57.89. Senior Katalin Ferenczi followed, placing fifth in a time of 58.12. Freshman Taylor McFarlane likewise registered a career best time, placing seventh in a time of 58.32. MacFarlane also placed 11th in the 200 freestyle, coming in at 1:53.44, one one-hundredth of a second off her season best time.
Freshman Jenna Dreyer followed Friday’s first place performance in the three-meter diving board by winning the one-meter event with a score of 288.25. Senior Miguel Velazquez came in second in the three-meter with a score of 591.80, while sophomore Derek Starks placed fourth with a 526.55.
The Hurricanes closed out the second day of the three-day meet with their first try at 800 freestyle relay this season. Knapp, Shue, Ferenczi and McFarlane combined to come in eighth in a time 7:49.22.
Miami returns to the pool for the third and final day of the Georgia Tech Invitational with prelims at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 3:30 p.m. The order of events are as follows: 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay, 1650 freestyle and the platform diving event.
